February 2020 Newsletter
Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
Digital sovereignty is an issue attracting increasing attention in the wake of the GDPR directive and the recent tensions that have arisen between public administrations and the giants of the IT sector. Sovereignty defines a situation where one is able to make decisions without pressure or constraints from superior powers. Originally applied to states, digital sovereignty can also be extended to individuals and the business world. In the case of software, the concept is reflected in the four freedoms that define free software—the freedoms to use, read, modify and share the code. Arguably, digital sovereignty is about much more than software as it includes data privacy and cyber security. However, while open source software does not itself define digital sovereignty, there can be no real digital sovereignty strategy without open source software.
