Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
The OW2 board of directors has a new chairperson. I'm pleased to start our newsletter by announcing that Gabriele Ruffatti was elected chairman of the board of OW2 at the board meeting on April 19. Gabriele is Technical Director at OW2 founding-member Engineering Group and has been an OW2 board member since the beginning of our community. Congratulations Gabriele!
We had questions about the positioning of OW2 relative to OpenStack. I've always said that OW2 and OpenStack are not rivals; they are complementary: the very same day OpenStack was announced, OW2 issued a support press release. Last month, we held a series of face-to-face meetings with executives and board members from the foundation that confirmed this complementarity. While OpenStack focuses on the compute-storage-network technologies which, much like the Linux operating system, will be productized in commercial distributions, the OW2 ecosystem adds value to the IaaS ecosystem by focusing on the technologies that will enable the implementation of cloud-oriented information systems and applications. We have a window of opportunity of two or three years to foster this complementarity.
After five years of dedication as OW2 CTO, Alexandre Lefebvre now feels it is time for a change. No doubt we will be seeing him again! On behalf of all of us who had the pleasure to work with Alex, I want to express OW2's gratitude and wish him all the best for the future. I am now delighted to introduce Xiaolong Kong, seconded to OW2 by Strategic Member France Telecom Orange. A highly qualified software developer and project manager, Xiaolong is now the new CTO of OW2. Please welcome Xiaolong!
Finally, it is a pleasure to announce that Ubidreams has joined the OW2 community as a Corporate Member. Ubidreams is the company behind the Nanoko project, a great collection of tools to assist with developing robust, modern crossmedia web applications.
Thank you for your contributions and on-going support,
Cedric Thomas
