October 2019 Newsletter
Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
Integrating open source software into an enterprise information system, i.e. more than simply deploying Linux systems, is typically within reach of users with the appropriate technical skillset and cultural awareness of what open source is about. Mainstream product-driven training provided by proprietary software vendors ensures developers become rapidly operational, but creates IT professionals who tend to lack the openness, versatility and creativity, and ability to engage in conversations on community forums – the secret sauce to taking full advantage of open source. As highlighted in the FOSS4SME study by our friends at OFE and FSFE, SMEs often pass on open source software and the opportunity to deploy affordable state of the art technology that would enhance their competitivity simply because they do not possess the necessary expertise. And yet, SMEs employing fewer than 250 people make up over 99% of all enterprises in the EU. They represent a huge potential market for providers of FOSS support services. Demystifying FOSS (no, it is not gratis) and simplifying decision-making for conventional managers (yes, it is fit for business) would contribute to unlocking the SME market. It is with this in mind that OW2 is developing the Market Readiness Levels methodology for projects in its code base. Stay tuned!
On another note, I am pleased to welcome new OW2 corporate SINTEF, Scandinavia’s largest independent research organisation, and to announce the Technology Council has accepted Melodic, submitted by corporate member 7bulls.com, as a new project in the OW2 code base and the OpenStack Foundation is OW2's latest Associate Organisation.
Thank you for your on-going support.
PS: Project leaders: Please use your project dashboard to publish your updates. Your news will appear on our Project Marketplace home page and in this newsletter.
