Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
Last month, I wrote about users who are vocal about open source software without actually participating, thus depriving themselves of some key advantages. I recently came across a large local administration, a keen user of open source software and an active contributor, whose example serves to illustrate the exact opposite. Oddly enough, this user does not relish going public, for example in the press or at conferences, for fear of damaging their relationship with well-known proprietary software vendors. Apparently, this risk is a stronger driver than the potential gains to be derived from contributing to an environment where like-minded users participate in a mutually beneficial exchange with peers. While this provides a typical case in terms of behavioral economics, it is regrettably the expression of latent FUD exercised by dominant players.
On another note, I am very pleased to introduce our new CTO, Stéphane Laurière. Operating out of the Paris area, Stéphane has long-standing experience in software R&D management and open source software.
Please check out the events OW2 will participate in over the next few months. Plan to attend the OW2 programming contest award conference in Tianjin in October, if you are in China, and save the dates, November 16-19, for OW2con'15 and the Paris Open Source Summit (POSS).
I am also delighted to announce that Associação SoftwareLivre.org (ASL), Brazil's most prominent open source association and the organizer of FISL, Latin America's largest open source event, has become an associate organization of OW2. We look forward to exploring cooperation opportunities with them, starting with the participation of the city of Porto Alegre in the OSS in Big Cities session we are organizing at POSS.
Thanking you for your contributions and on-going support,
Cedric Thomas
