Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
Quick follow-up to last month's news on the Copyright Directive. After heated debates, on July 5 the European Parliament denied rapporteur Voss the mandate to move forward with the Directive. The Directive is to be discussed during the next Plenary session (10-13 September, 2018) and MEPs now have the opportunity to #DeleteArt13, or at least replace it with a more sensible compromise. Stay tuned for an Action Week September 4-11, spearheaded by our friends at OpenForum Europe, the Free Software Foundation Europe and Copyright for Creativity. September 5 is action day for FOSS developers.
FOSS continues to face significant challlenges in Europe. It is perceived mainly as a collaborative process, an efficient way to develop software, share intellectual property and reduce costs. Customers and policy makers see FOSS being driven by individualistic freedom-seeking programmers and are still sceptical as to its economic and strategic value. They fail to understand there is a FOSS ecosystem that creates valuable jobs, enable SMEs to thrive and that is in their own interest to support it.
On another note, I am proud to welcome new Corporate Member Capgemini, the global powerhouse in consulting, technology services and digital transformation.
Summer has arrived and the OW2 Management Office is taking turns to go on well-deserved vacations. Please note OW2 will not be operating at full speed during August.

FISL, July 11-14, Porto Alegre
