Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
I am delighted to announce that OW2's board of directors elected Dr. Yuri Glickman as its chairman during its meeting on April 19. Project manager at founding-member Fraunhofer FOKUS, Yuri has been an active member of the board for a number of years. Prof. Wei-Tek Tsai is appointed Vice-President to help develop OW2 in China. Congratulations to both! In his motivation letter, our new chairman emphasized his ambition to “position OW2 as an open independent international open source organisation with a strong open source community behind” and to help it become “a centre of excellence for open source governance”.
At OW2 we have thrived on making the organisation's governance as transparent as possible. It is now time to focus OW2 on the governance of open source projects. I already touched on it in March - see my “Governance makes the difference” presentation here – and, as announced, we have effectively started working with the AppHub advisory board to develop a charter on open source project management. Our approach is that open source project governance is a concept implemented through best practices in project management. Concentrating on identifying, sharing and even enforcing these project management best practices at OW2 is what will help us develop a competitive code base.
Two final housekeeping notes. You may have noticed that we have just upgraded the OW2 main website, at least the platform that runs it, so please use the report-a-bug button if you see something wrong. And please note that the extended deadline for submitting topics for the programming contest is fast approaching.
Thank you for your contributions and on-going support,
Cedric Thomas
