November 2020 Newsletter
Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
It may be that SaaS is growing the fastest and software as a product is no longer driving the software industry. However it doesn’t mean open source is disappearing. By an evolution stemming from the industry’s need to maximize its profits SaaS vendors require constant access to a reservoir of state-of-the-art, and de facto standard, open source components.
Initiated by developers applying the best practices of academic research to software development with the aim of creating commons beneficial to all, open source software is growing to gradually become an economic institution driven by profit-making corporations incapable of integrating emotions and consciousness. As open source becomes an abstract system at the expense of the individuality and humanity of the early days, we believe it is within the remit of non-profit community organisations such as OW2 to nurture these values.
On another note, although due to the pandemic we regrettably had to postpone the OW2con Community Day, we are delighted to announce and celebrate the winners of our 2020 OW2 Best Project Awards. Congratulations to Knowage for the Technology Award, Lutece for the Community Award and MELODIC for the Market Award.
Thanking you for your on-going support, stay safe!
PS: Project leaders: Please use your project dashboard to publish your updates. Your news will appear on our Project Marketplace home page and in this newsletter.
