October 2020 Newsletter
Dear OW2 Members, dear All,
The COVID-19 crisis has brought renewed interest in resilience and sovereignty concerns across all sectors of our economies. From the IT perspective, this calls for more consideration of open source software because, although politically ignored and economically marginalized, “open source components and libraries are the foundation of literally every application in every industry” (2020 Synopsys Report).
Our economies need a long-term supply of open source software. They need this web of relationship and complementary resources we call the open source ecosystem to be sustainable. Non-profit communities like robust, small and medium-sized companies with flexible offerings permeating the whole economy are more valuable than global leaders whose successes in reality do not trickle down to the rest of us.
Users of open source software are an essential part of the ecosystem. They must be aware that they have a vested interest in the long-term success of their open source software and service vendors and the financial sustainability of the open source projects and libraries they depend on. While open source software does not itself define digital sovereignty, there can be no true digital sovereignty strategy without open source software.
We at OW2 are busy contributing to a balanced European open source ecosystem with our Market Readiness Levels and Good Governance initiatives. Check them out!
A quick reminder to Project Leaders, you have until October 15th to submit your project to the OW2con'20 Best Project Awards contest. Submit your project now! The winners will be announced at the OW2 Community Day on November 3rd in Grenoble.
